Manatee Tracking Updates from biologist, Monica Ross:

2/3/2006:

Mo:
Mo has continued to use the springs mostly during the day and heading out to Millers Creek or Bagley Cove during the night.  We did observe him taking some trips out of the springs into Kings Bay to feed during the day last week.  Three times we saw him feeding!  Body condition continues to improve.

Snorty:
Snorty traveled up to Lake Woodruff after a cold front in mid-January and has not returned back to Blue Spring.  He has been observed feeding with other animals while in Lake Woodruff and appears to be in good shape.  The water temperature where he has been observed feeding has been around 63.  We have anticipated Snorty had been using Deleon Spring as an alternate warm water site.  This spring is located off Lake Woodruff.  Yesterday Snorty was observed in Deleon Spring!

Bo:
Bo moved south after his capture in November to the southeast tip of Florida between Card Sound and US 1 bridges.  He was seen on numerous occasions over Thallasia grassbeds but only observed feeding on a few occasions.  He was routinely moving back and forth between C111 canal and C20 canal just south of Turkey Point.  C20 canal is the same canal that Brooks used as a warm water site several years back.  Unfortunately, this area has poor water quality so we could not get a good look at his condition.  On 1/14, Bo moved back to Blackpoint and then was with Douglas at Princeton canal on 1/16.  With much better water clarity at Princeton, we were able to get a good look at Bo and observed he was thinner than at his last capture. Due to very large objects swimming in the area (unknown what...but big), we did not get an opportunity to get an underwater visual on him until this week.  He is thin with a flat stomach, nothing concaved inward and no longitudinal folds. He does not have a peanut shaped head and no ribs could be seen.  But he was observed gorging out, feeding on halodule.  In fact, since he has moved back to the Princeton area, he has been observed feeding on numerous occasions.  Seems like he prefers halodule to thallasia!  We have seen Bo drinking from the flood structure spillage.

Douglas:
Douglas has remained in the Princeton canal area moving back and forth through the flood structure.  He has been observed feeding on halodule out on the grass flats or on hydrilla behind the structure.  He is usually with other manatees and has been observed drinking from the structure spillage.  We were able to get an underwater visual of Douglas this week and he has a round belly and looks lean and mean.  He was observed nibbling on halodule and began to bottom rest right after I swam away.
