Salvador and Desoto's health assessment is postponed

September 8, 2004:

It was decided today to postpone the health assessments for Salvador and Desoto for several practical reasons:
- "icky" weather along east side of Tampa Bay (scientific term)
- acid chemical spill north of proposed capture site
- Desoto's tag not updating properly (we don't know where he is)
- tired and stressed out staff shouldn't operate heavy machinery

The acid spill north of Alafia River has not killed off any fish "yet" near the mouth of the river.  There were a lot of birds and large fish feeding on small fish just north of Teco power plant, but we could not see anything dead in the area.  Maybe picking off the weak ones.  Dead fish were visible north of Alafia and the mangroves also appeared burned near Archie Creek.  Monday, Salvador left his typical area (mouth of the Alafia River) and is now in the southern portion of Apollo Beach canals.  Smart boy!

Will keep you updated on the search for Desoto.
