Dundee found dead:

It is with much sadness that we report the death of one of MRP's manatees, Dundee, who was found on the NW shore of Lake Beresford. The following report was supplied by Andy Garrett of FWC:

On 07 July 2008, the carcass of Dundee, MEC0858, was recovered by Ann Spellman of FWC and transported to the Marine Mammal Pathobiology Lab in the early evening and stored in the MMPL cold room. Dundee was positively identified by his PIT tags and by the "H2" freeze brand on his peduncle. The necropsy was conducted in the morning of 09 July 2008 when it was possible to have Dr. Dave Murphy present for the necropsy.

The carcass was badly decomposed and distended with gas. Most internal organs were decomposed. A large birds nest of monofilament fishing lines of varying sizes and colors, several small pieces of plastic, black braided line, a lead weight, and small metal swivel was found approximately 1 meter caudal (downstream) of the stomach in the small intestine. This birds nest caused several intussusceptions (intestine that is inside itself like a telescope) in the small intestine which resulted in an obstruction. The entire g.i. tract was empty of contents. No broken or luxated bones were found deep to the resolving watercraft pattern on the dorsum. The preliminary cause of death is: human; other. The preliminary report will still need to be reviewed before it is finalized.

In a side note, Dr. Murphy and Dr. Spriggs of Lowry Park Zoo were present at the necropsy and they were the ones who investigated the intussusceptions.
