Myriah is an adult, female manatee who was rescued in 1994 after being found alone and trapped in rocks at Jupiter Inlet Beach after the tide had gone out.  She was brought into captivity as an orphan and hand reared by Miami Seaquarium staff.  In 1999, she was transferred to the EPCOT-Living Seas facility where she remained until her release on Feb. 5th, 2002 in Cutler Ridge on the southeast coast.

The following are pictures of her release:

Myriah, who liked to throw temper tantrums when captured, was transported to the release site in a special foam lined box seen here.  The box was needed for her own safety and the safety of the people releasing her.

The box with manatee inside was removed from the truck by a fork lift.

The box was then attached to a crane which transported her to the water.

Before Myriah was released, she was fitted with a belt around her tail to which a satellite tracking tag was attached.

Myriah can be seen here in the box lying on her back with the belt attached waiting to be released.

Bye Myriah!  Myriah swimming away after her release.  Her tag will send locations to the biologists tracking her.
